W. H. Walters Free Public Library History

In April 1937, the Alpha National Bank Building was purchased by William Henry Walters and presented as a gift to the Borough of Alpha to be used as a Free Public Library. The Board of Trustees voted to name this library the Williams H. Walters free Public Library in honor of Mr. Walters. On May 8, 1937, the Board of Trustees applied for a charter and it was granted on May 12, 1937. The library officially opened on August 1, 1937 with Edna Sitgreaves serving as its first Librarian.
